Chitarre, Drumset Magazine and Sonus Factory choose Italian scholarship winners

The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, in partnership with Sonus Factory, one of Italy’s leading schools of contemporary music, is delighted to announce that Simone Pannozzo (drums) and Carlo Coronato (guitar) are the winners of the Institute’s 2012 Italian Scholarships, supported by DW drums, Yamaha guitars, Chitarre and Drumset magazines and of course Sonus Factory. These two lucky individuals will now receive a free 3-month course, plus flight and accommodation costs, at the Institute in London, a package worth over £5,000.

At the live finals, held at Sonus Factory’s Rome facilities, students first underwent a short interview and then performed to the assembled crowd comprising of fellow competitors along with their friends and families. The standards of performance was uniformly very high, but also very varied with students performing both original pieces and set repertoire, as well as improvising and more freeform soloing. The judges included faculty members from both the Institute and Sonus Factory, together with Paolo Somigli from Chitarre magazine and Alfredo Romeo from Drumset magazine.

Institute director Pete Whittard commented:  ‘The Institute gives away almost £40,000 worth of scholarships each year to talented and deserving students, but this is our first year extending the programme to Italy. It was clear from the quality of the entrants that the standard of musicianship in Italy is extremely high!

It has been a fantastic experience that we very much plan to repeat next year. We would like to thank DW and Yamaha, Chitarre and Drumset magazines, and of course Sonus Factory, our Italian education partners, for supporting the awards. We have together enabled two talented young Italian musicians to benefit from the Institute’s experienced teaching faculty, and experience first- hand a different musical culture.
