Mackie’s DL1608 in the Field with Dierks Bentley and Brad

When Mackie launched the DL1608 Digital Live Mixer with iPad Control at NAMM earlier this year it turned more than a few heads in the industry. This full featured, 16-channel mixer introduced an entirely new take on live sound with its groundbreaking new paradigm – complete iPad control. As Mackie gears up for the launch of the DL1608’s Master Fader control app in June and the arrival of the DL1608 in stores worldwide later this summer, they’re field testing the app by putting it in the hands of front of house engineers in a wide range of real world scenarios.

Most recently, the DL1608 got some face-time with FOH engineers for Dierks Bentley and Brad (Stone Gossard, Shawn Smith, Regan Hagar, Jeremy Toback). Both engineers used the DL1608 for the first time on April 21, 2012 at Seattle independent music store, Easy Street Records. The live show was part of national Record Store Day, an annual celebration where 700 independently owned record stores collaborate with musicians to celebrate the art of music. Easy Street Records features a small venue with a maximum capacity of 750 people that commonly hosts afternoon shows with touring artists scheduled for headlining shows at larger Seattle venues later that evening.  With an extremely tight front of house space, the venue demands a compact mixer solution that can guarantee premium sound and give the engineer massive control.

Both FOH engineers, Pugs (Dierks Bentley) and Barrett Jones (Brad), had time for only a quick tutorial before their 30-minute sound checks.  Normally a FOH engineer wouldn’t touch a digital mixer they’ve never used  just minutes before a show (especially since this performance would be streaming live on Sirius Satellite Radio), but in this case both engineers found the user interface intuitive and comprehensive, with all the functionality they expect in a digital mixer. “Although I had never used this mixer before, it was straight forward, easy to use, and well laid out,” said Barrett Jones.

Besides having an intuitive interface that was easy to navigate with little instruction, another huge benefit of the DL1608 is the ability to control the mixer from anywhere in the venue. “It was great to be able to tweak the monitors from each monitor position on stage with the iPad controller… the ability to mix the show while walking around the floor was really nice,” said Jones.

During the 10-hour day, which featured performances by four bands in total, the DL1608 performed without a hitch and Mackie received tremendous hands-on insight from the engineers. These real world field tests are an essential part of Mackie’s product design process. Stress testing the hardware in a variety of conditions ensures the DL1608 hardware will work reliably for customers. In addition, real world feedback on the Master Fader control application will shape future updates as it continually evolves through simple app store updates, adding value to the DL1608.

The Master Fader app will be available free in the iOS-App Store in June 2012. Mackie will also soon premiere a DL1608 video podcast series offering tons of great information about the DL1608, including all the basics, advanced how-to’s, and tips and tricks. Later episodes will specifically respond to questions that customers pose to Mackie’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. The DL1608 video podcast series will start in May 2012 in iTunes. The DL1608 will begin shipping in Summer 2012.

Mackie Expands Portable PA Offerings

New range of flexible, professional gear perfect for passive and powered systems

Mackie today announces a new range of gear designed to meet the global customer demand for passive systems. The new system is composed of three different series of products: S500 Series Passive Loudspeakers, FRS Series Power Amplifiers and the SP260 2×6 Speaker Processor.

“Our customers have asked for an expanded portable PA line that delivers professional performance at amazing prices,” remarked Mackie’s Director of Product Management, Greg Young. “This new system does just that, with class-leading performance and unmatched affordability.”

Offering class-leading power handling and construction, Mackie S500 Series Passive Loudspeakers deliver professional results in rugged designs that are exceedingly affordable. Delivering a high-powered solution for Mackie’s popular PPM Series of powered mixers, S500 passive loudspeakers utilize high-output transducers housed within rugged enclosures covered in tough PVC vinyl and capped with protective edge bumpers. All S500 models feature NL4 and 1/4″ inputs and thru connections. There are three full-range boxes in the series: the S512 2-way 12″, the S515 2-way 15″ and the S525 2-way dual 15″. There is also a companion 18″ subwoofer, the S518.

Available in two different high-powered configurations (FRS-1700 & FRS-2800), Mackie FRS Series Power Amplifiers utilize Mackie’s proven Fast Recovery™ technology for quicker transient response, keeping the sound clean and undistorted even when pushed hard. High-current, switching power supplies maximize efficiency and minimize the weight, making  FRS power amplifiers a professional choice that keeps the amp rack light for transportation.

Offering sophisticated EQ, dynamics processing and system protection, the SP260 2×6 Speaker Processor provides complete system optimization for both passive and powered systems. The six outputs feature five different operating modes to cover a wide range of systems. Each output features dedicated level control, polarity invert, high/low-pass filters, 7-band parametric/shelving EQ, 600ms delay and limiting. Two input channels provide independent 600ms delay and a flexible 5-band parametric/shelving EQ. The convenient front-panel control also includes 7-segment LED metering per channel. The SP260 utilizes high-end 24-bit AKM® AD/DA converters with 120dB dynamic range for class-leading sound quality. With 24 user-definable presets and flexible I/O for simple routing and configuration, the SP260 is an ultra-flexible processor, ideal for a wide range of portable and permanent applications.

All three series are scheduled for Q2, 2012 availability. Visit Mackie during Prolight + Sound / Musikmesse from March 21-24, 2012 in Frankfurt, Germany in Halle 6.1, Stand C30 for additional info, including pricing.  For more detailed product information, please visit www.mackie.com.

Digidesign Expands The VENUE Family With The D-Show Profile Mixing Console

Digidesign® is proud to announce the addition of D-Show Profile™ to the VENUE live sound environment family. This compact mixing console is a size-conscious alternative to the wildly popular D-Show™, the flagship console of the VENUE line. D-Show Profile offers full compatibility with all existing VENUE hardware components, total file portability, and an incredibly compact footprint—all of which ensures the exact same sound quality, reliability, and flexibility for which VENUE is now well known.

Compact Form Factor
D-Show Profile features a 24-channel frame that’s smaller than the footprint of a single D-Show main unit. The console serves as the perfect alternative for sound reinforcement vendors, rental houses, and contractors that need to offer a powerful system in a compact form for small- to mid-size environments and applications, such as houses of worship, corporate events, theaters, mid-level concert venues, and remote broadcasts.

Total Show File Portability
D-Show Profile uses the same D-Show software as its big brother D-Show, enabling engineers to create and load files for use on either console. This also means that users won’t need to learn new software if they’re already familiar with D-Show. D-Show engineers can move straight on to D-Show Profile—and vice-versa—without additional software acclimation to start mixing or building show files. Plus engineers will no longer need to build new show files (as many currently do) when simply moving to a different console by the same manufacturer.

Full Hardware Compatibility
D-Show Profile works with all existing VENUE hardware components, such as FOH and Stage racks. For sound reinforcement vendors and rental houses, this can represent a tremendous amount of savings and alleviate fears of current inventory obsolescence. With the VENUE model of interconnectivity and flexibility, vendors can greatly widen the scope of their existing system applications by simply offering an alternative mixing console.

New Features
Profile features eight General Purpose Interface (GPI) inputs and eight GPI outputs to connect and control any external equipment that can react to simple switch closures. Used in conjunction with the new Event List in D-Show 2.5 software, engineers can design up to 999 simple or complex macros and use GPI to control external switches, devices, equipment functions, and more.

Digidesign will be showcasing the entire VENUE family at the PLASA ’06 show in London (stand #K57) from September 10-13.

D-Show Profile is expected to ship in Q4 2006. A complete D-Show Profile System, which includes the Profile mixing console and VENUE FOH and Stage racks, will be available via authorized Digidesign dealers for $54,985 US MSRP. The Profile console will also be available separately for $17,955 US MSRP.

Global Truss Introduces The SQ-CP1 All-in-One Mobile Rigging System

Now, mobile DJs can stay grounded while setting up their high-flying lighting systems. With the introduction of the new SQ-CP1 Mobile Crank-Up System, Global Truss America has made it possible for lighting users to keep their feet on the floor as they assemble professional-quality overhead rigs of hanging effects and fixtures.

The SQ-CP1 Mobile Crank-Up System is a cost-saving, all-in-one package that includes two square pieces of truss, the necessary support bars and two crank stands — everything you need to erect a fully loaded, stable rig without ever having to climb a ladder.

“You can stand there and hang your lights at eye level, then crank ‘er up,” said Ken Kahn, general manager of Global Truss America. “That’s why crank stands make it so much easier to rig your lighting, especially if you’re a solo act. Plus, the SQ-CP1 Mobile Crank-Up System’s super-strong lightweight aluminum trussing is simple to assemble — no tools are required, and all the connector pins you need come included.”

The two 6.5′ square sections of SQ-4112 truss go across the top of the rig. The STSB-005 Support Bars attach to the tops of the ST-132 Crank Stands and hold the truss securely in place. The entire SQ-CP1 Mobile Crank-Up System snaps together so quickly, one person can set it up in about 15 minutes.

Global Truss’ TUV-approved trussing is made from the high-strength 6082-T6 aluminum alloy, a durable and corrosion-resistant material used by the aviation industry. This alloy offers the highest tensile strength currently available and is three times lighter than steel, so the system components are incredibly durable yet easy to transport. The alloy is also easily finished, allowing Global Truss customers to special-order a variety of attractive colors and powder-coat finishes.

Like all Global Truss rigs, the SQ-CP1 Mobile Crank-Up System is extremely flexible, so you can expand and re-configure it for use at different venues. In fact, you can use the company’s full range of trussing products and conical connectors to build whatever structure your lighting system requires.

Each of the ST-132 Crank Stands is rated at 220 lbs., so the entire SQ-CP1 Mobile Crank-Up System can hold a maximum load of 440 lbs. — enough to include about four to six moving heads plus several plug-and-play lights. Since the stands are just 63″ high at their lowest point, the average person can assemble the rig and crank it up to as high as 158″ by raising each side a little bit at a time.

The STSB-005 Support Bars measure 120″ wide by 95″ high and have a diameter of 40mm. Their 18″-wide secure latches are adjustable from 4.5″ to 16″/8″.
